Quick answer
Yes, if the board already opens in your browser. It comes down as one ZIP, the same as a public board. You never type a Pinterest password into Unpinned.
| Browser extension | Paste-a-link site | Password tool | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private board you can already open | Yes | No | Claims to |
| What you hand over | The session already in the tab | A public URL | Your Pinterest password |
| What you get | ZIP of originals | Nothing, or one public pin | Don't |
The Pinterest board downloader shows what that ZIP looks like. Unpinned cannot open a board you are not allowed to see, and it does not try.
Why most downloaders cannot do this
Paste-a-link downloader sites run on someone else's server. That server is not logged into your Pinterest account, so it gets the logged-out view. A secret board has no logged-out view. You get nothing, or an error. The comparison page is why that limit shapes everything else those sites can do.
A browser extension is different. Unpinned runs inside the tab you already have open. It reads the board the same way your screen does, using the session cookie Pinterest gave your browser when you signed in. You never type a password into Unpinned. We never hold a copy of your credentials. If you can scroll the board, the extension can page through it.
Which private boards work
Pinterest has a few flavours of "not public". They all download the same way as long as the board is yours or shared with you.
Secret boards are the ones only you and invited collaborators see. Your own secret boards work. A secret board a client or colleague added you to works too.
Group boards, public or secret, work if your account is a collaborator. You do not need to be the owner.
Archived boards are hidden from your profile but still open from your boards list. Open one and download it as normal.
What does not work is someone else's secret board you have not been invited to. There is no workaround in Unpinned for that. A tool that claims one is either lying or about to ask for your password. I would not install either.
Step by step
- Sign into Pinterest in Chrome, Firefox or Edge as the account that has access.
- Install Unpinned from your browser's store and sign in with the email link. No password.
- Open the private board. If it renders on screen, you are set.
- Click the Unpinned icon and choose Download board.
The ZIP is named after the board and holds every image and video at the size Pinterest stores. Sections become subfolders. The free plan covers 50 pins per day. Pro removes the cap for larger boards. The step-by-step guide to downloading a whole board has the clicks with screenshots.
What Unpinned sees and stores
Unpinned asks for access to Pinterest only. It does not request permission for other sites. It never reads your profile, your messages or your other boards. The only thing we keep on our side is the email you signed up with, which we use to send the login link. Board contents go from Pinterest to your disk and nowhere else. The security page lists the permissions the extension asks for and why.
This is the part that matters when the board belongs to a client. Nothing from it touches a third-party server, so there is nothing to explain if an NDA conversation comes up.
FAQ
Can I download a secret board without logging in?
No. A secret board has no logged-out view, so no tool can fetch it without your session. Unpinned uses the login you already have in the browser.
Does the board owner get notified?
No. Downloading reads the board the way viewing it does. Pinterest does not send a notification for either.
Can I download a private board I was removed from?
No. Once your access is gone the board no longer opens in your browser, and Unpinned only sees what your browser sees. If you want an insurance copy of boards you rely on, backing up your Pinterest boards covers how often to do it.
How does this compare to Pin Kit?
Both are extensions, so both only see what your browser sees. The differences are price, browsers and free-plan limits, covered in Unpinned vs Pin Kit.
