How to get dark mode on Pinterest desktop
Pinterest has no dark mode on desktop. How to get one free in Chrome, Firefox and Edge, what the phone app does, and what to try when the theme won't apply.
Product · Workflow
Pinterest follows system dark mode on the phone. On the desktop site there is no switch. Pinterest's settings have no switch for it, your profile has nothing either, and no flag unlocks it behind the scenes. The page stays white.
Unthemed is the free extension we built for that. Install it, and Pinterest goes dark with your system, or you pick a theme and a font yourself. You may know it as Unpinned Darkmode. Version 2.0 added more colour schemes, proper contrast and custom fonts.
We also make Unpinned, a board downloader. Different job. Unthemed changes how the tab looks. Unpinned puts the board on disk. Most people who collect at night want both.
Does Pinterest have a dark mode?
On the phone, yes. On the desktop website, no.
| Where | Dark mode | How |
|---|---|---|
| Pinterest app, iPhone and Android | Yes | Follows your phone's system setting |
| pinterest.com in Chrome, Firefox, Edge | No | Needs an extension |
| pinterest.com in Safari | No | No Unthemed build for Safari yet |
So when people search "Pinterest dark mode not working", it usually is working. On mobile. The desktop site simply never got one. Your browser being dark does not help either: the tabs and toolbar turn black, and the Pinterest page inside stays white.
Install Unthemed
- Open the listing for your browser and add the extension.
- Reload any Pinterest tab you already had open.
- If your computer is set to dark, Pinterest is now dark. Done.
Can't see the icon? Puzzle piece in the toolbar, find Unthemed, pin it. You only need the icon if you want to pick a mode, a theme or a font by hand.
It is free. It only asks for access to Pinterest's own domains, and the Firefox listing states it collects no data.
Automatic or manual
Automatic is the default. Pinterest matches whatever the system is doing, so if your system switches at sunset, Pinterest switches with it.
To set the system side:
- macOS: System Settings, Appearance, then Dark or Auto.
- Windows 11: Settings, Personalization, Colors, then Dark under "Choose your mode".
Manual: toolbar icon, then light or dark, and a colour scheme. There are dark, colourful and neutral schemes, and you can swap Pinterest's font for any Google Font. A manual choice sticks until you switch back to system, whatever the system is doing. Useful if you keep the computer light for client work and only want Pinterest dark.
Other ways to darken Pinterest
There are two general-purpose routes. Both work on every site, and that is both the appeal and the drawback.
A site-wide dark extension. Dark Reader is the big one, with over a million Firefox users. It recolours any page with its own generic rules. Good if you want the whole web dark. On a page that is mostly images, generic rules are a guess, so check that your pins still look like your pins.
The browser's forced dark mode. Chrome and Edge both have an experimental flag, "Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents", at chrome://flags/#enable-force-dark or edge://flags/#enable-force-dark. It darkens every website at once, by algorithm. It is a flag, so it can change or disappear between browser versions.
Unthemed does one site. Its themes are made for Pinterest's layout, not computed from it, and version 2.0 tuned text and interface colours to proper contrast ratios. That is the reason we built a Pinterest-only one instead of telling people to install a general one. If you already run Dark Reader everywhere and like it on Pinterest, keep it.
Then get Unpinned if you want the files
Unthemed does not save pins. If the board is the point, install Unpinned as well. Open the board, click Unpinned, get a ZIP with every image and video. 50 pins a day free, no card. The Pinterest board downloader page covers what it does, and downloading an entire Pinterest board has the clicks.
| Unthemed | Unpinned | |
|---|---|---|
| Dark Pinterest on desktop | Yes | No |
| Whole board as a ZIP | No | Yes |
| Browsers | Chrome, Firefox, Edge | Chrome, Firefox, Edge |
| Price | Free | Free for 50 pins a day |
Troubleshooting
The page is still white. Reload the Pinterest tab. Pages that were open before the install do not change on their own.
It is light, but my computer is dark. You may have picked a mode by hand earlier, and a manual choice wins over the system. Open the Unthemed icon and pick dark, or system.
A theme does not apply. Restart the browser. That fixes almost every case we have seen.
